ANobAG

Employee without contributing employer

Simple Definition

A special social security status for employees living in Switzerland but working for a foreign employer who has NO Swiss legal entity.

Why this matters to Expats.

The "Remote Work" headache. Since your US/UK employer doesn't pay Swiss taxes, YOU become responsible for forwarding BOTH shares (Employer + Employee, approx 12-14%) of social security (AHV/IV/EO/ALV) to the compensation office. You are technically "employed" but handle "employer" duties.

Actionable Intelligence

Contract: Do not accept your standard "Gross Salary" from London/NY. You need a higher gross to cover the employer social costs you now have to pay (~10-15% extra).

Accident Insurance: As an ANobAG, you must purchase mandatory accident insurance (UVG) yourself. Private health insurance is NOT enough.

Pension: You are not legally forced to do 2nd Pillar (BVG) but you absolutely should set up a voluntary plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to imply start a company (GmbH)?

For salaries > CHF 150k, maybe. ANobAG is simpler (no capital requirement, no audit), but GmbH allows more expense deductions.

Does EOR work?

Yes, services like Deel/Remote.com handle this for you, effectively becoming your Swiss employer. This avoids ANobAG entirely.
