Grenzgänger
Cross-Border Commuter
Simple Definition
A person who lives in an EU/EFTA border zone (e.g. Germany, France, Italy) but works in Switzerland and returns home weekly.
Why this matters to Expats.
Holds a G-Permit. Taxes are the nightmare here. Depending on the specific Double Taxation Treaty (DDA) between CH and your country (FR/DE/IT), you might be taxed at source in CH (4.5%) and then pay the rest at home, or fully in CH. It is NOT standard.
Actionable Intelligence
Health Insurance: Grenzgänger have a "Right of Option". You can choose Swiss insurance (LAMal) or home county insurance. Swiss "Grenzgänger Models" are often cheaper than German/French public insurance.
Home Office: Be careful! If you work >25% (social security) or >49% (tax) from home, your status might collapse.
