Church Tax

Simple Definition

Tax levied by recognized state churches (Roman Catholic, Protestant Reformed, Christian Catholic) on their members to fund community services.

Why this matters to Expats.

The costly tick-box. When you register at the Gemeinde, if you blindly tick "Catholic" or "Protestant", you are liable. This can be 10-20% of your municipal tax bill (hundreds or thousands of Francs).

Actionable Intelligence

Opting Out: You can leave the church formally (Kirchenaustritt). This involves a written letter to the parish. Once processed, the tax stops.

Jewish Tax: In some cantons (BS, BE, ZH partial), Jewish congregations are also state-recognized and can tax members.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does "Christian" count?

"Other Christian" or "Free Church" usually prevents the tax. It applies specifically to the Landeskirchen (State Churches).

Is it retroactive?

No. You pay until the date you formally leave.
