Ausländerausweis

Foreigner Identity Card

[Ows-vise]

Simple Definition

The physical credit-card sized document (formerly paper booklets) that acts as proof of your Swiss residency permit (L, B, C, or G).

Why this matters to Expats.

This card is NOT a travel document by itself (you need your passport too), but try getting back into Switzerland without it! It proves you live here. Losing it is a bureaucratic nightmare costing time and fees (~CHF 100+).

Actionable Intelligence

Expiry: Check the expiry date! The permit (right to stay) might be valid, but the card expires. Renew it 2 months early.

Digital Copy: Keep a secure scan of both sides. You need it for almost every contract (Mobile, Gym, Housing).

Address Change: If you move cantons, you usually get a new card. Same canton = they might just update their system.
