Hausordnung
House Rules
Simple Definition
The set of rules governing life in your building. It covers noise (Ruhezeiten), usage of shared spaces, pet policies, and laundry schedules.
Why this matters to Expats.
This is not a "suggestion". It is part of your contract. Swiss neighbors enforce this via social pressure or complaints. A common rule: "Nachtruhe" (Quiet Time) is strictly 22:00 to 07:00. No showering, no loud walking, no flushing toilets (in extreme older buildings) after 10 PM.
Actionable Intelligence
Sundays: Sunday is a Holy Day of Quiet. No mowing lawns, no recycling glass, no vacuuming.
Shoes: It is customary (and reduces noise) to remove shoes inside the apartment.
Introduction: When moving in, introduce yourself to neighbors. A chocolate bar buys a lot of goodwill for future noise tolerance.
