Every school on the canton’s list that teaches in English, or in German and English: what each one teaches, what it charges and when it takes applications, all from the schools’ own pages.

Most schools take applications all year; ISZL advises applying by February.
Which international and bilingual schools are there in Zug?
The canton’s list of recognised private schools, dated 23 September 2026, includes three schools teaching mainly in English, four bilingual German–English schools and seven English or bilingual kindergartens. ISZL offers all three core IB programmes and Institut Montana the IB Diploma; ISCS teaches the Cambridge curriculum up to A Levels.
The tables below cover every school on the canton’s list of recognised private schools (opens in a new tab) that teaches in English, or in German and English (zg.ch, checked ). Schools appear in alphabetical order, with the ages and campus each school states. Institut Montana appears twice because it runs an English-language international school and bilingual Swiss programmes on one campus.
International schools
The International School of Zug and Luzern (ISZL) is a non-profit foundation with about 1,200 students from 60 countries (ISZL, checked ) (ISZL, checked ). Early Years to Grade 8 study at its Zug Campus in Baar, Grades 9 to 12 at the Riverside Campus in Hünenberg (ISZL, checked ). The IB lists it for the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes (IBO, checked ). In Grades 11 and 12, students take either the IB Diploma or the ISZL High School Programme with Advanced Placement courses; both lead to the ISZL High School Diploma, accredited by NEASC (ISZL, checked ). The “Luzern” in the name comes from a Lucerne campus: ISZL announced in 2015 that it would close in June 2016, and its website now lists only Baar and Hünenberg (swissinfo.ch, checked ) (ISZL, checked ).
ISCS International School of Central Switzerland in Cham calls itself “The British School of Zug” and follows the Cambridge International curriculum: Early Years from age 3, Primary Years 1–6, Middle School Years 7–9, then the IGCSE in Years 10–11 and A Levels in Years 12–13 (ISCS, checked ) (ISCS, checked ). It states that Cambridge authorises it up to A Level and that it belongs to the Swiss Group of International Schools (ISCS, checked ).

Its international school, Grades 6–12, teaches in English towards Cambridge Lower Secondary, the IGCSE and, in the last two years, the IB Diploma or a high school diploma (Institut Montana, checked ). It has been an IB World School since 1987 (IBO, checked ).
Bilingual schools
Four Forest Bilingual International School in Steinhausen, part of the Cognita group, teaches the Zug curriculum with the British National Curriculum for English, with teaching split equally between German and English; in secondary each subject has its own language (Four Forest, checked ) (Four Forest, checked ). Kindergartens
Kindergarten is the first compulsory school year in Zug, so private providers need cantonal recognition for it (zg.ch, checked ). Seven English or bilingual providers have it. Most are full-day centres that also look after younger children; the recognition covers their kindergarten. globegarden, for example, team-teaches its kindergarten in English and German, and Montessori Kindergarten of Zug works in Swiss German, German and English (globegarden, checked ) (Montessori Kindergarten of Zug, checked ). All published fees for Basel, Geneva, Zug and Zurich in one table, with a CSV download: international school fees 2026–27.
What do the fees leave out?
ISZL charges separately for lunch, the school bus, music lessons, exam and university application costs and trips (ISZL, checked ). ISCS excludes textbooks, lunch (CHF 2,423 a year), transport (CHF 2,043–3,202 a year), after-school care, IGCSE and A level exam fees and trips (ISCS, checked ). SIS bills lunch and after-school care separately (SIS, checked ). Institut Montana’s day fee includes lunch and the morning and afternoon breaks (Institut Montana, checked ).
Why Zug residents can pay less
The canton can pay recognised private schools half of its standard per-pupil amount (Normpauschale) for each Zug pupil in compulsory schooling, to reduce their fees (Schulgesetz § 78), and at least half of it has to reach those families (SchulG Zug, checked ) (zg.ch, checked ). This is why Four Forest publishes separate fees for residents (Four Forest, checked ), and why Stepping Stones passes half of its contribution for compulsory-age children back to parents (Stepping Stones, checked ).
For the years before compulsory kindergarten, families living in Zug in which every parent works or studies can claim the cantonal childcare allowance: CHF 47.15 a day for children over 18 months in a licensed daycare from August 2026 to July 2027 (zg.ch, checked ). ISZL says its Early Years qualify (ISZL, checked ).
Kindergarten fees
Kindergartens mostly charge by the month and by days booked. Montessori Kindergarten of Zug charges CHF 1,755–2,825 a month from 1 August 2026, with 10% off in the compulsory year for Zug residents (Montessori Kindergarten of Zug, checked ); kidsworld zug charges CHF 1,000–2,500 a month for two to five days, with no year stated (work&life zug, checked ). Stepping Stones charges CHF 15,500–29,550 a year for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, from five mornings to five full days with lunch (Stepping Stones, checked ). futura Montessori Zug sends its rates on request (futura Montessori Zug, checked ); globegarden, Little Star and Mea Semita publish none (globegarden, checked ) (Little Star, checked ) (Mea Semita, checked ).

When do you apply to an international school in Zug?
Most schools and kindergartens in Zug take applications all year and admit children mid-year when a place is free. ISZL advises applying by February for an August start, as some grades fill up. SIS says most families enrol between February and April. Institut Montana runs rolling admissions with ability and language tests.
The table summarises each school’s admissions page, checked on 21 October 2026. The steps are much the same everywhere: an enquiry, a visit or video call, trial or taster days for younger children, then an application and, once a place is offered, a one-off fee that secures it (ISZL, checked ) (SIS, checked ) (Four Forest, checked ).
What schools ask for
ISZL asks for a passport, school reports and a teacher evaluation for primary pupils, and two teacher evaluations, one from the maths teacher, for older students; it aims to decide within 10 working days, and students joining mid-year from Grade 7 may sit an English test (ISZL, checked ). Institut Montana uses the CAT4 ability test and language placement tests, and its offer letter is valid for two weeks; its international school expects English at level B1 by Year 9 (Institut Montana, checked ). SIS sets no entrance exam during compulsory schooling and keeps waiting lists for full classes (SIS, checked ). MEA SEMITA gives places on a first-come, first-served basis (MEA SEMITA, checked ). ISCS’s admissions page publishes no timeline, only an enquiry form and school tours (ISCS, checked ).
Kindergarten places
Stepping Stones starts children in August if they turn two by 31 December, and in the second or third term if places are free (Stepping Stones, checked ). Montessori Kindergarten of Zug takes new children on any Monday and keeps a waiting list (Montessori Kindergarten of Zug, checked ); Little Star admits kindergarten children during the school year too (Little Star, checked ). futura Montessori Zug notes that its spaces fill early (futura Montessori Zug, checked ). For how the IB, A Levels and the Matura lead to Swiss universities, see our guide to international schools in Switzerland.

Which private schools does canton Zug recognise?
A private school in Zug needs recognition from the Directorate of Education and Culture to teach compulsory schooling, from the compulsory kindergarten year to Grade 9. It must teach to public-school standards, though schools for foreign children may follow their home country’s curriculum. The canton’s list of 23 September 2026 names 17 schools.
The rules are in the cantonal Schulgesetz (SchulG Zug, checked ):
- Anyone may open a private school, but it needs recognition to teach in compulsory schooling (§ 74).
- It must offer teaching that meets the standards of public schools, evaluate its own quality, have it checked externally and send that report to the Directorate (§ 75).
- Teachers need a diploma recognised by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK); exceptions can be approved (§ 75).
- Schools for foreign children can be recognised if they teach to the curriculum of the home country (§ 75).
- The Directorate can order measures and withdraw recognition if problems are not fixed (§ 77).
The canton’s guidance adds that recognised schools must keep a move into public school possible, and that new schools apply by the end of December before they open (zg.ch, checked ). Outside compulsory schooling, recognition is optional (§ 76) (SchulG Zug, checked ). Gymnasiums that award the Swiss Matura are recognised separately, and the canton links to the national list (zg.ch, checked ).
What recognition means for your child
Compulsory schooling in Zug lasts ten years, one in kindergarten and nine in primary and lower secondary, and can be completed at a public school, a recognised private school or, with a permit, through private tuition (§ 5) (SchulG Zug, checked ). Parents whose child does not attend public school have to tell the school rector of their commune, and recognised private schools report their pupils to the commune at the start of each school year (zg.ch, checked ) (SchulG Zug, checked ). Compulsory schooling cannot be completed at a private school that is not recognised (SchulG Zug, checked ).
Recognised schools not in this guide
Four schools on the canton’s list (opens in a new tab) teach in German only: Kollegium St. Michael, Kunterbunt – Raum zum Lernen, LMS-Schule (same address and school leadership as Four Forest) and Tagesschule Elementa in Neuheim, which teaches English as a subject from Grade 1 (zg.ch, checked ) (zg.ch, checked ).
How does public school work in Zug for expat children?
Public school in Zug is free and taught in German. Children who turn five by the end of February must start the compulsory kindergarten year that August, and every commune offers a voluntary kindergarten year before it. Children with little German get 8–10 German lessons a week. Families enrol their child with the commune’s school rector.
Public schools may not charge tuition (Schulgesetz § 18) (SchulG Zug, checked ). Compulsory schooling lasts ten years: one kindergarten year, six years of primary school and three of lower secondary (zg.ch, checked ). Children who turn five by 31 May may start the compulsory year early, and the rector can approve an earlier or later start on request (zg.ch, checked ).
Pupils with little or no German get beginner classes of 8 to 10 lessons a week, partly in separate groups depending on the commune; those who can communicate but still struggle get at least 2 lessons a week (zg.ch, checked ). The move from primary to lower secondary needs no entrance exam (zg.ch, checked ).
The cantonal school inspectorate (Schulaufsicht) advises families, employers and relocation firms when children arrive from abroad, on topics from German as a second language to private schools (zg.ch, checked ). For housing, tax and childcare costs, see our Zug city page and cost of living in Zug.
