How much tax do you pay in Zurich?
Income tax goes to the federation, the canton and the city. In 2026 the city of Zurich applies a multiplier of 119% and the canton one of 95% to the simple cantonal tax, plus 10% for Reformed or Catholic church members. Foreign employees without a C permit usually pay tax at source, deducted from their salary.
The simple cantonal tax from the cantonal tariff is multiplied: in 2026 by 95% for the canton, 119% for the city and, for church members, 10% (Reformed or Roman Catholic) or 14% (Christian Catholic). The cantonal multiplier was 98% in 2025; the city’s has been 119% since at least 2022(City of Zurich, checked ). Federal income tax is added and is the same across Switzerland.

Tax at source on a B or L permit
If you live in the canton, work for an employer in Switzerland and are neither a C permit holder nor Swiss, nor married to one, tax is deducted from your salary at source. From a gross salary of CHF 120,000 you are assessed afterwards on a full tax return; below that you can apply for this assessment to claim deductions, by 31 March of the following year(Canton of Zurich, checked ).
Everyone else files an ordinary return with the city: the 2025 return was due on 31 March 2026, online through ZHprivateTax or on paper, and extensions must be requested before the deadline(City of Zurich, checked ). See how to find an English-speaking tax advisor and the tax advisors in Zurich.

Which schools and childcare are there for expat families in Zurich?
Public schools teach in German and are free. Kindergarten is compulsory for two years: children who turn four by 31 July start that August. The canton licenses private schools, including bilingual German-English ones and schools teaching in another language. For daycare, the city reduces fees for households below a set income limit.
Public school (Volksschule) starts with two years of compulsory kindergarten. Children aged four by 31 July start that August; in 2027/28 the first day is 23 August 2027. Parents get a letter from mid-November and register through the city’s “Meine Kinder” service; families who arrive later contact their district school authority (Kreisschulbehörde). First-year children attend mornings only(City of Zurich, checked ).
Bilingual and international schools
The canton’s register of licensed private schools lists these bilingual German-English schools in the city that teach beyond kindergarten: Academia International School, Cantaleum, d’Insle Montessori, Firstclass, Freies Gymnasium, Kid’s Island Bilingual School, Lipschule, Rietberg Montessori, School of Tomorrow, SIS Swiss International School (Wollishofen), SkillForge, Sprungbrett Montessori and Tandem IMS. Children First teaches in another language, as do the Inter-Community School (Zumikon), International School Zurich North (Wallisellen) and Zurich International School (lower school in Wädenswil) outside the city(Canton of Zurich, checked ).
See international schools in Zurich, international schools in Switzerland, and the listings of international and bilingual schools.
Daycare subsidies
Rather than issuing vouchers, the city lowers the parental fee. A subsidy needs the number of care days the city will fund, based on work, training or job search, and a contribution factor from income and wealth: taxable income plus 10% of taxable wealth above CHF 50,000 per parent, minus CHF 6,000 for the household and CHF 6,000 per person. From CHF 100,000 the city pays nothing towards private daycare(VO KB, checked ). Costs, applications and waiting lists in English: Kita in Zurich. Listings: daycare centres in Zurich.
