Which therapists and psychologists in Zurich confirm English?

Thirty Zurich practices state English on their own websites and have clinicians with a Zurich practice licence in the federal registers: two solo psychiatrists, two group practices that include psychiatrists, and 26 practices of federally recognised psychotherapists. Most are in Zurich's Kreise 1 to 8. The table shows the languages each practice names and what it publishes on availability.

Each entry rests on the practice's own pages (an English version, a team page listing English, or a sentence saying therapy is offered in English) and on the register entry of a clinician named there. PsyReg filters by language only for German, French, Italian and Romansh, so English has to come from the practice (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), Health Professions platform, checked ).

Seven practices publish something about availability. Barbara Schlup and Daniela Holenstein state that they are not taking new patients (Praxis für Psychotherapie Dr. Barbara Schlup, checked ) (Daniela Holenstein, Psychotherapy and Couples Counselling, checked ), and Roland Weber is fully booked without a waiting list (Roland Weber, Praxis für Psychotherapie & Coaching, checked ). Ana Hermann mentions a wait of about three months (Ana Hermann, Psychoanalytische Praxis, checked ) and Ute Nowotka about six months (Praxis für Psychotherapie Ute Nowotka, checked ). Miriam Brintzinger offers an initial consultation "at short notice" (Miriam Brintzinger, Praxis für Psychotherapie & Coaching, checked ). Curanima marks each therapist as accepting or not accepting new clients (Curanima GmbH, checked ). The other practices state nothing on availability.

Who answers outside practice hours for mental health in Zurich?

For a psychiatric emergency that is not life-threatening, the Aerztefon (0800 33 66 55) answers around the clock across the canton of Zurich, and the Crisis Intervention Centre KIZ takes calls on 058 384 65 00. When a life is at risk, the number is 144. Heart2Heart, the English line, is 0800 143 000, 6 to 11 pm.

Practices rarely publish out-of-hours arrangements. 8 of the 30 list emergency numbers on their websites, as the table shows; the others state nothing.

Does basic insurance pay for therapy in Zurich?

Yes, in two ways. A psychiatrist's psychotherapy is a doctor's service under basic insurance. A psychologist's psychotherapy has been covered since 1 July 2022 on a doctor's prescription, up to 15 sessions each, with the insurer's approval after 30, if the psychotherapist is admitted. The deductible and the 10% share, capped at CHF 700 a year, apply.

To bill basic insurance, a psychotherapist needs a cantonal licence, three years of clinical experience and an independent practice (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), checked ) (Fedlex, SR 832.102, checked ).

  • Psychiatrists: basic insurance pays a doctor's psychotherapy; after 40 sessions the doctor reports to the insurer's medical adviser (Fedlex, SR 832.112.31, checked ).
  • Psychologists with the federal psychotherapy title: one prescription from an eligible doctor covers up to 15 sessions and a second prescription 15 more; from the 31st session the insurer's approval is needed (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), checked ) (Fedlex, SR 832.112.31, checked ).
  • What remains to pay: the deductible, CHF 300 to 2,500 for adults, and then 10% of the costs, up to CHF 700 a year (ch.ch, checked ) (Fedlex, SR 832.10, checked ).
  • Without a prescription, or with a therapist who is not admitted: private payment, or supplementary insurance if the policy covers it (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), checked ).

Six practices in the table publish a private rate: CHF 160 an hour at Ute Nowotka (Praxis für Psychotherapie Ute Nowotka, checked ), CHF 170 for 50 minutes at Miriam Brintzinger and Barbara Schlup (Miriam Brintzinger, Praxis für Psychotherapie & Coaching, checked ) (Praxis für Psychotherapie Dr. Barbara Schlup, checked ), CHF 180 for 60 minutes at Michaela Esslen (Praxis Dr. Esslen, checked ), from CHF 180 at Kinnunen Privatpraxis (Kinnunen Privatpraxis, checked ) and CHF 200 for 60 minutes at Martina Heeren (Martina Heeren, Psychotherapeutische Praxis, checked ).

How do the titles of Zurich therapists differ, and where are they listed?

A psychologist holds a recognised psychology degree. A psychotherapist adds a federal postgraduate title and needs a licence from the canton where they work to practise on their own responsibility. A psychiatrist is a doctor with the specialist title in psychiatry and psychotherapy. PsyReg lists psychologists and shows licences; MedReg lists doctors. Counsellors and coaches hold no federal title.

The Psychology Professions Act protects the title psychologist and sets five federal postgraduate titles, one of them psychotherapy; practising psychotherapy on one's own responsibility requires a cantonal licence (Fedlex, SR 935.81, checked ). A holder of the psychotherapy title may call themselves a federally recognised psychotherapist (Fedlex, SR 935.811, checked ).

PsyReg has been public since 1 August 2017 and shows titles, whether a licence is held and any restrictions (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), checked ). Psychiatrists appear in MedReg, with the specialist title and the cantons where a licence is granted (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), Health Professions platform, checked ). Every practice in the table has at least one clinician with a Zurich licence in one of the two registers. Counsellors and coaches without a federal title are not listed.

Therapists & psychologists in Zürich: questions

Does the federal register show which therapists speak English?

No. PsyReg filters by language only for German, French, Italian and Romansh. The English statements here come from the practices' own websites; PsyReg and MedReg confirm the title and the Zurich licence.

Are the practices on this page taking new patients?

It varies. Barbara Schlup and Daniela Holenstein state that they are not, Roland Weber is fully booked, Ana Hermann mentions about three months' wait and Ute Nowotka about six. Curanima marks each therapist. Most state nothing.

Does basic insurance pay for therapy with a psychologist in Zurich?

Yes, since 1 July 2022, on a doctor's prescription, if the psychotherapist is licensed by the canton and admitted to bill basic insurance. One prescription covers up to 15 sessions; the insurer's approval is needed after 30. A psychiatrist's psychotherapy needs no separate prescription.

Which number answers psychiatric emergencies outside office hours in Zurich?

The Aerztefon, 0800 33 66 55, is free and answers around the clock. The Crisis Intervention Centre KIZ is on 058 384 65 00. When a life is at risk, the number is 144.

Is there a mental health helpline in English?

Yes. Heart2Heart, the English line of 143, is 0800 143 000, open 6 pm to 11 pm, by phone only. 143 itself answers around the clock in German, French and Italian.

What does a private therapy session cost in Zurich?

Six practices on this page publish a rate, from CHF 160 an hour to CHF 200 for 60 minutes. Each practice sets its own price.
