Which therapists and psychologists in Geneva confirm English?

Nineteen practices confirm English on their own websites: seventeen in the City of Geneva, one in Carouge and one in Le Grand-Saconnex. They range from solo psychotherapists and psychiatrists to group centres, and each names a psychotherapist or psychiatrist with a Geneva licence. The table shows languages, what each publishes about new patients, and out-of-hours arrangements.

English is listed for at least one clinician at each practice. Centre Emergences states that it cannot take new patients at present (Centre Emergences, checked ), and Dr Massa has limited new admissions and keeps a waiting list (Cabinet Dr Alessandro Massa, checked ). The cantonal medical society’s directory marks Dr Collin of Vitapsy as accepting new patients and Dr Alt of Cabinet Delos as not (Association des médecins du canton de Genève (AMGe), checked ) (Association des médecins du canton de Genève (AMGe), checked ).

Who can I reach for urgent mental health care in Geneva outside office hours?

For a life-threatening emergency the number is 144. For anything else the canton lists Centrale Santé Genève on 0800 116 117, free of charge and open day and night, and the HUG psychiatric consultations on 022 372 38 62. The HUG adult emergency department is open around the clock from age 16.

  • 144: ambulance, when a life is at risk (ch.ch, checked ).
  • 0800 116 117 (Centrale Santé Genève): free, around the clock; health professionals assess symptoms and direct callers to a suitable service (Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), checked ) (Canton of Geneva, checked ).
  • 022 372 38 62: HUG psychiatric consultations, the number the canton lists for psychiatric care (Canton of Geneva, checked ) (Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), checked ).
  • HUG emergency departments: adults from 16 on 022 372 81 20; the children’s department, up to age 16, also treats psychological problems; both open 24 hours (Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), checked ).
  • 143 (La Main tendue): listening line, around the clock (Die Dargebotene Hand (143.ch), checked ); its English line, Heart2Heart, is 0800 143 000, 6 to 11 pm (Die Dargebotene Hand (143.ch), checked ). 147 is the line for children and young people (Pro Juventute (147.ch), checked ).
  • Doctors’ home visits: Genève Médecins 022 754 54 54, Médecins à domicile 022 340 36 36, SOS Médecins 022 748 49 50 (Canton of Geneva, checked ).

Few practices publish their own out-of-hours arrangement. Vitapsy gives the HUG number for urgent requests outside business hours, and Francesca Brossard offers evening and weekend sessions on Zoom.

What does basic insurance pay for therapy in Geneva?

Since 1 July 2022, basic insurance (LAMal) pays a psychologist’s psychotherapy on a doctor’s prescription, 15 sessions per prescription, if the psychotherapist holds a cantonal licence and is admitted to bill. A psychiatrist’s psychotherapy is billed directly. The deductible and the 10% co-payment apply, and the language of the session does not matter.

The prescription model is described by the Federal Office of Public Health: a second prescription covers sessions 16 to 30, and the insurer’s medical adviser reviews the case after 30 sessions (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), checked ) (Fedlex, SR 832.112.31, checked ). Admission to bill basic insurance is not automatic for a licensed psychotherapist (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), checked ) (Fedlex, SR 832.102, checked ) (Fedlex, SR 935.81, checked ). For adults the deductible is CHF 300 to 2,500 a year, then 10% up to CHF 700 (ch.ch, checked ).

Several practices above state that psychotherapy is reimbursed by basic insurance, usually on prescription. Les Psy Réunis states the opposite for the practitioners on its English-speaking page: they are not recognised by compulsory insurance, patients settle each session, and international insurance may pay (Les Psy Réunis, checked ).

Is there public couples counselling or psychiatric care in Geneva?

Yes. The Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) run a sexual health and family planning unit that offers couple consultations by appointment on 022 372 55 00, and a psychiatric consultation line on 022 372 38 62. The pages checked do not state which languages these services use.

The HUG couple consultation is meant for couples in a crisis, whatever their orientation (Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), checked ). Psychiatric consultations are listed by the canton and the HUG (Canton of Geneva, checked ) (Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), checked ). Private couple therapy is offered by several practices in the table, for example Psy & Co, Francesca Brossard and Reis Psychotherapie.

Therapists & psychologists in Genève: questions

Does basic insurance cover therapy in English in Geneva?

Insurance does not look at the language. It pays psychological psychotherapy on a doctor’s prescription when the therapist holds a Geneva licence and is admitted to bill, and a psychiatrist’s psychotherapy directly. Deductible and 10% co-payment apply.

Is a prescription needed to see a psychotherapist in Geneva?

For basic insurance to pay a psychologist’s psychotherapy, yes: a doctor such as a GP, paediatrician or psychiatrist prescribes it. A psychiatrist needs no separate prescription, and self-paying patients can book without one.

How can a therapist’s title be checked in Geneva?

PsyReg lists federally recognised psychotherapists and shows whether they hold a cantonal licence. MedReg lists doctors with the title Psychiatry and psychotherapy and their licence in the canton of Geneva.

Which number is open around the clock for non-life-threatening problems?

Centrale Santé Genève, 0800 116 117, is free and open 24 hours a day. For life-threatening situations the ambulance number is 144.

Which crisis lines work in English?

143.ch runs an English telephone line, Heart2Heart, on 0800 143 000, from 6 to 11 pm. The 143 line itself answers around the clock in German, French and Italian.

Do these practices take new patients?

Most do not say. Centre Emergences states it cannot take new patients at present, and Dr Massa has a waiting list. The table shows what each practice publishes.
