Which therapists and psychologists in Basel confirm English?

Twenty-three practices in this directory, 22 in Basel and one in Liestal, state on their own websites that they work in English. Most are psychologists with the federal psychotherapy title, and four include psychiatrists. Four publish a limit on new patients, so the table shows what each practice says about space.

A practice is listed when its own website has an English version or says that sessions can be held in English. In group practices the statement can apply to some therapists only: Blumenrain, for instance, states it for two of its 14 therapists.

Licences are checked per person, because the canton where a therapist works issues the practice licence (Fedlex, SR 935.81, checked ). Psychologists in the table hold the federal title of psychotherapist and a Basel-Stadt licence, or a Basel-Landschaft licence for the Liestal entry (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), Health Professions platform, checked ). Psychiatrists hold a federal specialist title in psychiatry and psychotherapy, or in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), Health Professions platform, checked ).

Who can I call out of hours for mental health in Basel?

In an emergency out of hours, the Medizinische Notrufzentrale answers on 061 261 15 15 around the clock for Basel-Stadt and Baselland. The University Psychiatric Clinics run emergency psychiatry 24 hours a day on 061 325 51 00 and a walk-in clinic from Monday to Friday. If a life is at risk, call 144.

The Notfallzentrum of the Universitätsspital Basel is open around the clock, seven days a week (Canton of Basel-Stadt, checked ). Bohny, Emmenegger, Sausewind and Talk About It list some of these numbers on their own sites.

Does basic insurance pay for therapy in English in Basel?

Yes, when the therapist is admitted to bill basic insurance; the language of the session makes no difference. A psychologist needs a doctor’s prescription for up to 15 sessions, while a psychiatrist bills without one. Without a prescription a session is paid privately; Basel-Stadt puts one at CHF 170 to 200 an hour.

Since 1 July 2022, psychological psychotherapists can bill basic insurance when a doctor prescribes the therapy. One prescription covers up to 15 sessions, a second covers sessions 16 to 30, and after 30 the insurer must approve further therapy (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), checked ) (Fedlex, SR 832.112.31, checked ). Psychiatrists are doctors: their psychotherapy is covered without a separate prescription, and after 40 sessions the doctor reports to the insurer’s medical adviser (Fedlex, SR 832.112.31, checked ). Only therapists the canton has admitted can bill basic insurance (Fedlex, SR 832.102, checked ).

Therapy counts towards the deductible, CHF 300 to 2,500 for adults. Above it the co-payment is 10%, capped at CHF 700 a year for adults and CHF 350 for children (ch.ch, checked ) (Fedlex, SR 832.10, checked ). Basel-Stadt puts the cost of a session at CHF 170 to 200 an hour (Canton of Basel-Stadt, checked ).

Practices that publish a self-pay rate are in the table below, each as stated on its own site (Esther Bieri Psychotherapie, checked ) (Praxis für Psychotherapie am Blumenrain, checked ) (Praxis Marc Bohny, checked ) (Martina Emmenegger, Praxis am Steinenberg, checked ) (Dr. phil. Ulrike Heitz, checked ) (Praxis Talk About It, Liestal, checked ) (University of Basel, Faculty of Psychology, checked ). They range from CHF 154.80 to CHF 200 for a session of 50 to 60 minutes.

PracticePublished self-pay rate

Prices as published on each practice’s own website, checked 21 October 2026; other practices in the table publish none.

How do I check a therapist’s licence in Basel?

PsyReg lists psychotherapists and MedReg lists psychiatrists, and both show whether a practice licence is granted in Basel-Stadt or Basel-Landschaft. The register has no English field, so English comes from the practice itself. The associations of the two Basels also publish a psychotherapy directory twice a year that lists members with their languages.

PsyReg filters language only by the national languages, so it cannot confirm English (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), Health Professions platform, checked ). MedReg shows the languages a doctor declared; the entries checked for this page list German only, even where the practice’s site confirms English (Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), Health Professions platform, checked ).

The Psychotherapieverzeichnis beider Basel, issued each January and July by four professional associations, lists psychologists and doctors with their languages and whether they bill basic insurance. Each professional is responsible for their own entry (VPB, PPB and the psychiatry specialist groups of Basel-Stadt and Baselland, via the canton of Basel-Stadt, checked ); the canton links to it from its mental-health page (Canton of Basel-Stadt, checked ).

Therapists & psychologists in Basel: questions

Can I see a psychologist in Basel without a prescription?

Yes, as a self-paying patient. Billing basic insurance needs a doctor’s prescription for psychological psychotherapy, but a practice can treat self-payers without one. Basel-Stadt puts a session at CHF 170 to 200 an hour.

Is there a walk-in psychiatric clinic in Basel?

Yes. The UPK Akutambulanz at Kornhausgasse 7 takes walk-ins from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm, without an appointment (061 325 81 81); waits of two hours or more are possible. Emergency psychiatry at Wilhelm Klein-Strasse 27 answers around the clock on 061 325 51 00.

Which crisis lines answer in English?

Heart2Heart, the English line of Die Dargebotene Hand, answers on 0800 143 000 from 6 to 11 pm, by phone only. The 143 line itself runs around the clock in German, French and Italian. For a life-threatening emergency, call 144.

Do the practices in the table have space?

It varies. In October 2026, four of the 23 practices publish a limit: one has no free appointments at the moment, one takes only self-payers, one expects waiting times and one offers short treatments only. The other 19 say nothing either way.

What titles do the listed therapists hold?

Psychologists hold the federal title of psychotherapist in PsyReg with a licence from Basel-Stadt, or Basel-Landschaft for the Liestal entry. Psychiatrists hold a federal specialist title in psychiatry and psychotherapy, or in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy, in MedReg.
