The city counts about 340 private daycare centres, which provide most of more than 12,000 places, besides 11 city-run centres and two satellites at 12 sites (City of Zurich, checked ). Centres take children from three months until kindergarten, and the city map shows every centre with a valid operating permit, coloured by subsidised places and marked for German-language support (City of Zurich, checked )(City of Zurich, checked ).
A subsidy needs two confirmations: the contribution factor from the Schools and Sports Department, based on income and wealth, and the number of care days the city funds, from the Social Department; reasons include work, training, job search, volunteering and the children's language integration (City of Zurich, checked ). The city pays the subsidy to the centre, which bills a lower parental fee, and it is not granted retroactively (City of Zurich, checked ). The standard cost of a full day is CHF 135.80, and subsidies stop at a relevant household amount of CHF 100,000 (2026 (ordinance in force from 1 Jan 2026)) (VO KB, checked )(VO KB, checked ). The minimum parental contribution is CHF 48 a month for one care day a week and CHF 240 for five (City of Zurich, checked ).
Costs of centres, after-school care and childminders for children under 14 can be deducted from cantonal taxes up to a ceiling per child, with a list of payments attached to the return (Zurich tax office, checked ).
