What do English-speaking tax advisers in Zurich do?

They prepare Swiss tax returns, handle withholding tax for B-permit holders (the application for an ordinary assessment and corrections of the deduction), represent clients when the tax office asks questions or raises an assessment, and some file US returns. Treuhand firms add bookkeeping and payroll for the self-employed and small companies.

  • Swiss tax return: due by 31 March for the previous year. Swiss citizens, C-permit holders and anyone not taxed only at source must file, even without a form in the post (Canton of Zurich, Kantonales Steueramt, checked ) (Fedlex, SR 642.11, checked ).
  • Withholding tax (Quellensteuer): foreign employees without a C permit pay tax through their payslip unless their spouse is Swiss or holds a C permit (Fedlex, SR 642.11, checked ). Advisers apply for a subsequent ordinary assessment (NOV), which assesses your income with the usual deductions, or ask for a correction of the amount deducted (Canton of Zurich, Kantonales Steueramt, checked ).
  • US returns: US citizens file on their worldwide income wherever they live; some advisers prepare the US returns, the FBAR and Form 8938, others work with US preparers (Internal Revenue Service, checked ) (Deloris AG, checked ).
  • Representation and objections: answering the tax office, checking the final assessment and filing an objection (Deloris AG, checked ).
  • Treuhand: bookkeeping, payroll and VAT for sole traders and small companies, as well as private tax returns (TREUHAND|SUISSE, checked ).

Two federal diploma titles are protected by law: Steuerexperte/-in and Treuhandexperte/-in mit eidg. Diplom. Using them without the exam is punishable (Fedlex, SR 412.10, checked ). TREUHAND|SUISSE, the national association, requires recognised professional training for membership (TREUHAND|SUISSE, checked ).

Which tax deadlines apply in Zurich?

The tax return is due on 31 March of the following year, and your municipal tax office can extend it, in the City of Zurich online and to 30 November at the latest. People taxed at source have their own 31 March deadlines: to apply for an ordinary assessment and to ask for a correction. Those two cannot be extended.

Ask for an extension before the deadline, at the tax office of the municipality you live in. The City of Zurich takes requests online through the E-Frist QR code on the return or in “Mein Konto”, and refuses requests that arrive late or reach past 30 November (Canton of Zurich, Kantonales Steueramt, checked ) (City of Zurich, Steueramt, checked ). Zurich’s online tax return is ZHprivateTax; paper is still accepted, and the canton publishes an English guide to the paper form (Canton of Zurich, Kantonales Steueramt, checked ) (Canton of Zurich, Kantonales Steueramt, checked ). Tax rates are set every year: for 2026 the canton levies 95% and the City of Zurich 119% of the basic cantonal tax (Canton of Zurich, Regierungsrat, checked ) (City of Zurich, Gemeinderat, checked ).

If you are taxed at source, an ordinary assessment is compulsory from CHF 120,000 gross salary a year, and also with other income over CHF 3,000 or assets over CHF 80,000 (CHF 160,000 for couples) (Fedlex, SR 642.118.2, checked ) (Canton of Zurich, Kantonales Steueramt, checked ). Below that, you can apply for one yourself by 31 March. Zurich takes the application only online in ZHServices, you cannot withdraw it, and it then applies every year until you stop being taxed at source (Fedlex, SR 642.11, checked ) (Canton of Zurich, Kantonales Steueramt, checked ) (Canton of Zurich, Kantonales Steueramt, checked ).

What does a tax return cost with a Zurich tax adviser?

Each firm sets its own price. Three of the Zurich tax and Treuhand firms in this directory publish one: their simplest private return starts between CHF 99 and CHF 350, with surcharges for property, securities, a second income or a withholding-tax correction. The others quote per case or by the hour.

The table shows only what each firm publishes on its own website, in alphabetical order; it is not a ranking. A firm’s final quote depends on your documents. For hourly work, the consumer magazine Beobachter gives a range of CHF 80 to 420 per hour across Switzerland (Beobachter, checked ).

What do US citizens in Zurich file in the US?

US citizens file a US return on their worldwide income wherever they live. Living abroad brings an automatic extension to June 15, though interest runs from April 15. Foreign accounts above USD 10,000 in total need an FBAR, and larger assets Form 8938. The foreign earned income exclusion and the foreign tax credit reduce double taxation.

  • Filing: citizens and resident aliens abroad file as if they lived in the US, with an automatic extension to June 15 and interest from April 15 (Internal Revenue Service, checked ) (Internal Revenue Service, checked ).
  • FBAR: due when your foreign accounts together exceeded USD 10,000 at any time in the year, filed with FinCEN (Internal Revenue Service, checked ).
  • Form 8938: for a single filer living abroad, assets over USD 200,000 on the last day of the year or over USD 300,000 at any time; double for joint filers (Internal Revenue Service, checked ).
  • Exclusion: up to USD 130,000 of foreign earned income for 2025 and USD 132,900 for 2026 (Internal Revenue Service, checked ).

The Swiss and US returns follow different calendars and rules. Some firms prepare both, others only one (see the table above). The directory lists US tax specialists in Basel, Geneva and Zug.

Do I need a tax adviser to file my tax return in Zurich?

No. You can file yourself in ZHprivateTax or on paper, and the canton publishes an English guide to the paper form. People hire an adviser for withholding-tax applications, property, shares, a second income, US filing or simply to have the return in English.

Only in some cases: with a gross salary of CHF 120,000 or more, other income over CHF 3,000 or assets over CHF 80,000 (CHF 160,000 for couples). Below that you can apply by 31 March for an ordinary assessment, which takes your deductions into account. Once granted, it applies until withholding tax ends.

What is the tax rate multiplier in the City of Zurich in 2026?

The canton levies 95% and the City of Zurich 119% of the basic cantonal tax for 2026, plus church tax for members of a recognised church. Federal tax comes on top.
