Lawyers & notaries: what's particular to Zurich
Lawyers in Zurich are supervised by a commission of judges and lawyers at the High Court. It keeps the register of lawyers entitled to appear in court, a list of EU/EFTA and UK lawyers, and a directory of lawyers who only give advice, all updated monthly (Zurich courts, checked ). The commission also runs disciplinary proceedings and decides on release from professional secrecy; it sits at Hirschengraben 15, 8001 Zurich, and gives no legal information (Zurich courts, checked ).
The Zurich Bar Association, the largest section of the Swiss Bar Association with 3,966 members, helps people find the right contact (Zurich Bar Association, checked ). Together with the city it runs a legal information desk at Strassburgstrasse 9, 8004 Zurich: 15 minutes, free, in person only. Numbered slots are handed out at the entrance from 16:30 on Monday to Wednesday and from 17:00 on Thursday, appointments run from 17:30 or 18:00 to 19:30 or 20:00, and neither advance booking nor telephone advice is offered (Zurich Bar Association, checked ).
Fees are agreed directly with the lawyer; all work counts as billable, the first meeting included, VAT is added, and the association's fee commission can review a bill but not the quality of the work (Zurich Bar Association, checked ).
Registering in Zurich
Arrivals from abroad register in person at the Personenmeldeamt Zürich Süd in the Stadthaus, Stadthausquai 17, with a booked appointment, and only once they actually live in the city (City of Zurich, checked ).
