Lawyers & notaries: what's particular to Lausanne

A Vaud notary is the State's public officer for authentic deeds, works on his or her own responsibility under the cantonal department and needs a licence from the Council of State. The licence follows a two-and-a-half-year traineeship and an examination before a commission chaired by a cantonal judge, and each notary pays the State CHF 5,000 a year for the monopoly (Canton of Vaud, checked ). Since a 2023 revision, the ceiling for the notary's liability insurance is CHF 5 million (Canton of Vaud, checked ).

The notary's fee is a public-law charge set by a Council of State tariff that cannot be changed by agreement, and people without sufficient means can be exempted. The parties answer jointly for it, and unless agreed otherwise the buyer bears the costs of a transfer deed (Canton of Vaud, checked ).

Lawyers appear in a cantonal register kept by the Chamber of Lawyers, searchable by name, place or category and including EU/EFTA lawyers, trainees and counsel (Canton of Vaud, checked ). The Vaud judiciary gives no legal advice itself and points to the legal desks of the Ordre des avocats vaudois and of the notaries' association (Canton of Vaud, checked ). Legal aid in civil and administrative cases pays a lawyer CHF 180 an hour and a trainee CHF 110, is repaid in monthly instalments in principle, and a refusal can be appealed within ten days (Canton of Vaud, checked ).

Registering in Lausanne

Newcomers register with the Service du contrôle des habitants at Rue du Port-Franc 18. The registration deadline is 14 days (2026) (lausanne.ch, checked ).
