Informal “français en été” classes meet free and without registration in parks in July and August, and a “bon de formation”, financed with six partner communes, gives a first French course to newcomers who arrived through family reunification and to Swiss citizens returning from abroad (Canton of Geneva, checked ).

Adults who have lived and paid tax in the canton for at least a year can apply for the annual training cheque (CAF), which can cover part or all of a course useful for work. The ceiling on the determining income (RDU) is CHF 72,000 for a single person and CHF 116,000 for a married couple, raised by CHF 8,000 per child (Canton of Geneva, checked ). The request goes in before the course starts, and the decision can arrive at once with an e-démarches account or by post within 10 days (Canton of Geneva, checked ).

Geneva has 15 of the 141 fide test locations on the fide office’s list. The whole test costs CHF 250, the spoken part CHF 170 and the written part CHF 120, and the language passport arrives about four weeks after the test (fide office, checked ). Ordinary naturalisation in Geneva asks for French at B1 spoken and A2 written, among other conditions, including two years of residence in the canton (Canton of Geneva, checked ).

The deadline after arrival is 14 days (2026) (ge.ch arrival, checked ), and a first B or L permit costs an EU/EFTA adult CHF 65 (Canton of Geneva, checked ).
