Local facts

International schools: what's particular to Geneva

Running a private school in Geneva needs the education department’s prior authorisation, granted by its service for the authorisation and supervision of private schools (SASEP) and revocable at any time. The regulation states that the authorisation is not a recognition of the teaching’s value (LIP C 1 10, checked ) (REPriv C 1 10.83, checked ). The SASEP directory dated 8 October 2026 has 75 entries, 58 of them covering the primary level and 39 of those listing English among the languages used (our count), and the canton calls it indicative (ge.ch, checked ) (ge.ch, checked ).

A school whose main language is not French must give enough lessons in French for pupils to integrate locally, and one that follows a foreign curriculum must show it reaches objectives at least equivalent to the public programme. Teaching only at a distance is not authorised, and a school may sign a tuition contract or collect fees only after it holds the authorisation (REPriv C 1 10.83, checked ).

Published 2026–27 tuition at the international schools near Geneva runs from CHF 13,200 in Grade 1 to CHF 39,200 a year, with registration and capital fees on top, as each school publishes it (compiled in our Geneva schools guide). Every child living in Geneva who is four by 31 July must be enrolled in a public school, a private school or at home (LIP C 1 10, checked ) (Canton of Geneva, checked ).
