Local facts

Bilingual schools: what's particular to Geneva

The canton and nearby Vaud lists include 11 private schools teaching in French and English, plus 20 Montessori and early-years schools with bilingual or English groups. Most follow the Plan d’études romand used in public schools (school by school in our Geneva schools guide). A private school may take children into the first primary classes from age 3 by 31 December, earlier than the public school’s age of 4 by 31 July (LIP C 1 10, checked ).

Classes for children under 4 in private schools must run at least four half-days over four days a week. They need at least two adults for a class of at most 22 children, including a teacher and a socio-educational assistant (REPriv C 1 10.83, checked ).

Published bilingual-school tuition reaches CHF 34,000 a year, and Montessori schools price by weekly schedule, from CHF 1,150 to CHF 2,550 a month at those that publish monthly fees on their own fee pages. A non-French-speaking child who moves to a public primary school joins an ordinary class and spends half the time in a reception class (Canton of Geneva, checked ).
