Serviced apartments: what's particular to Basel
Under the practice of the building and hospitality inspectorate, a let of one night to three months counts as commercial use under the housing promotion act and needs a hospitality licence; the canton's tourism page sets the threshold at more than six beds, and the licence costs CHF 600 (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ) (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ). Guests pay a tourist tax of CHF 4.20 per person and night. Children under 12 and guests living in the canton are exempt, nothing is due from the 31st night in the same short-let lodging, and Airbnb adds the tax at booking. The proceeds finance the BaselCard, which gives guests free local public transport (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ).
Newcomers who move into a furnished flat register within 14 days (2026) (Einwohneramt BS, checked ) like other residents, while people whose main home is in another canton and who stay only on working or training days apply for weekly-resident status (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ). On 1 June 2026, 168 of the 912 empty flats were furnished, 106 of them one-room flats (Basel-Stadt, checked ), in a stock of about 110,000 dwellings (Mietpreisraster, checked ). The average net rent of an ordinary 3-room flat is CHF 1,445 a month (2024) (FSO, checked ).
Registering in Basel
Newcomers register with the Einwohneramt of Bevölkerungsdienste und Migration at Spiegelgasse 6; from 2 November 2026 its counters work from a temporary building on Schwarzwaldallee, opposite Badischer Bahnhof. The deadline is 14 days (2026) (Einwohneramt BS, checked ): the date of the online booking counts, not the date of the appointment. Registration costs CHF 25 per person (Einwohneramt BS, checked ).
