Serviced apartments: what's particular to Geneva

An EU/EFTA national may stay up to three months within six without a permit, for instance on a tourist or medical stay, and need not announce this to the OCPM. A longer stay needs a residence or work permit, and the arrival is announced through that application (Canton of Geneva, checked ); work of under three months is declared online to the State Secretariat for Migration instead (ge.ch EU/EFTA permit, checked ). Guests who are not tax residents of the canton pay a tourist tax of CHF 4.25 per person and night in every category of establishment, and CHF 2.50 at campsites (Canton of Geneva, checked ). People with tax domicile in Geneva are exempt, and part of the proceeds pays for a public-transport ticket for the length of a stay (Canton of Geneva, checked ).

Whoever runs the lodging or profits from the rented unit collects the tax and pays it over, and a platform may do so under a contract with the tourism authority (Canton of Geneva, checked ). A home offered through a platform may be let as a whole for at most 90 days a year; beyond that the use is classed as a change of purpose, and regular hosting counts as a professional activity needing authorisation from the commercial police (PCTN) (Canton of Geneva, checked ). A host who lodges a foreign person for pay for under 90 days must notify the cantonal police once the guest takes possession, through a verified e-démarches registration (Canton of Geneva, checked ).

Registering in Geneva

Newcomers announce their arrival to the cantonal population and migration office (OCPM), route de Chancy 88 in Onex (ge.ch OCPM, checked ). Most procedures run online through an e-démarches account on ge.ch, and the counters open by appointment only. The deadline after arrival is 14 days (2026) (ge.ch arrival, checked ), and a first B or L permit costs an EU/EFTA adult CHF 65 (Canton of Geneva, checked ). The steps are in registering at your commune.
