Apartment search services: what's particular to Basel
The canton's vacancy rate was 0.8% (1 June 2026) (Basel-Stadt, checked ), and the average net rent of a 3-room flat was CHF 1,445 a month (2024) (FSO, checked ). By size, vacancy stood at 1.0% for 2-room and 0.6% for 3-room flats, and 866 of the 912 empty flats were advertised for rent (Basel-Stadt, checked ). Landlords often ask applicants for a debt-collection register extract (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ). The Betreibungsamt Basel-Stadt covers debtors in Basel, Riehen and Bettingen (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ). Its extract lists the collection entries of the last five years and any loss certificates, costs CHF 17 at the counter on Aeschenvorstadt 56 without an appointment or CHF 18 with delivery, and online orders are completed within 48 hours on working days (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ).
Since 1 November 2018 the canton has made its official form compulsory for stating the initial rent of a new tenancy, and the Staatliche Schlichtungsstelle für Mietstreitigkeiten publishes the approved forms for initial rents, rent increases and landlord terminations (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ). The lease carries the administrative dwelling number (AWN) that the residents' office asks for at registration (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ). The canton's housing page gives three months as the usual notice period for flats (Kanton Basel-Stadt, checked ), and notice normally ends on a month-end other than 31 December (Hallo Baselstadt, checked ).
Registering in Basel
Newcomers register with the Einwohneramt of Bevölkerungsdienste und Migration at Spiegelgasse 6; from 2 November 2026 its counters work from a temporary building on Schwarzwaldallee, opposite Badischer Bahnhof. The deadline is 14 days (2026) (Einwohneramt BS, checked ): the date of the online booking counts, not the date of the appointment. Registration costs CHF 25 per person (Einwohneramt BS, checked ).
